In this episode of the More Movies Podcast, Greg and Dave talk about the latest film by The Whale (2022) directed by Darren Aronofsky, in detail (so consider this a SPOILER ALERT!) and also discuss the 95th Academy Awards giving their opinions on this year’s Oscar wins.
The Whale tells the story of Charlie, played by Brendan Fraser, a reclusive and morbidly obese English teacher who lives in a small town in Idaho. Scarred by the profound wounds of grief and guilt and confined to his claustrophobic apartment, Charlie has all the time in the world to contemplate the damaging faults of the past, fatherhood, and reconciliation. He realises his time in short and attempts to reconnect with his estranged, angry teenage daughter Ellie, played by Sadie Sink, before it is too late.
The 95th Academy Awards was presented on March 12, 2023, in a ceremony held by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the event was back on form and full of fun with all the stars. The awards had some big winners and talking points, with big cinema releases like Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022), The Whale (2022) and All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) all receiving honours.
