In this episode of the More Movies Podcast, Greg and Dave discuss the movie event of the year – Barbenheimer! – the release of Barbie (2023) directed by Greta Gerwig and Oppenheimer (2023) directed by Christopher Nolan.
If you’ve been on the internet at all this year you will not have been able to escape the phrase ‘Barbenheimer’ – a portmanteau of Barbie and Oppenheimer which has been used to represent and celebrate the fact that these two much anticipated movies would be released on the same day, 21st July 2023. We were lucky enough to see both movies over the weekend in our favourite Odeon cinema in Cardiff Bay.
Firstly we saw Barbie starring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera and Will Ferrell. This amazing comedy drama is an original and colourful satire that takes place in Barbieland and the Real World and sees the titular ‘doll’ experience an existential crisis which leads her to investigate the meaning of life by venturing into modern day L.A. and discovering that real life is more complicated and difficult than she ever imagined.
Next we saw Oppenheimer on the IMAX screen. This powerful historical drama stars Cillian Murphy in the lead role, supported by Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh and a whole host of other famous names which make up an incredible cast. The film explores the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the so-called father of the atomic bomb. His complex life and times were plagued by inner demons, jealous rivals and bitter enemies, all of which are played out against the backdrop of the Trinity Tests that took place in New Mexico during the Second World War, resulting in the creation of the first ever nuclear weapon of mass destruction.
More Movies Podcast is a magazine show where Greg and Dave talk about the movies they have been watching and assorted movie news, trivia and general film enthusiasm. In this episode, we talk about Indiana Jones in quite some detail, so consider this a SPOILER ALERT!
