In this episode of the More Movies Weekly podcast, Greg and Dave discuss The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967), the French musical comedy film written and directed by Jacques Demy. The film stars George Chakiris, Michel Piccoli, Jacques Perrin, Grover Dale and Geneviève Thénier, along with Gene Kelly and Danielle Darrieux.
The Young Girls of Rochefort follows Delphine and Solange, two sisters living in Rochefort, France. Delphine is a dancing teacher and Solange composes and teaches the piano. Maxence is a poet and a painter. He is doing his military service. Simon owns a music shop, he left Paris once month ago to come back where he fell in love 10 years ago. They are looking for love, looking for each other, without being aware that their ideal partner is very close… A film whose scenario is much less important than its feeling of euphory, according to the director Jacques Demy.
In the spirit of the film, we also take a look at our Top 5 movie musicals, picking out our favourite films based around singing and dancing – in the rain! From classic musical pictures from the golden age of Hollywood through the latest jukebox musicals of today, Greg and Dave choose their favourites!
